How we build
The math is on the page
Every result comes with the bracket-by-bracket breakdown, a chart, and a plain-language explanation of each line. If we can't explain a number, we don't show it.
Numbers live in data, not in code
Brackets, deductions, payroll limits, and state rules are stored as structured data and covered by automated tests, so a new tax year is a data update, not a rewrite.
Simple on purpose
We leave out the edge cases that make tax software hard to read. You get a clear, honest estimate instead of a false sense of precision.
What you can calculate
Where the numbers come from
Everything is based on published 2026 figures. When the rules change, the data changes with them.
Federal income tax
2026 tax brackets and standard deductions for every filing status, based on the IRS's annual inflation adjustments.
Payroll taxes and 401(k)
Social Security at 6.2% on wages up to $184,500, Medicare at 1.45% plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax, and the $24,500 401(k) limit with catch-up contributions.
Capital gains
The 0%, 15%, and 20% long-term rates, the 25% cap on depreciation recapture, the 28% collectibles cap, the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax, and the home sale exclusion.
State income tax
All 50 states and D.C., whether they have no income tax, a flat rate, or progressive brackets. For progressive states, married-filer thresholds are approximated.
What we leave out
Your real return may differ from our estimate. These calculators are built for planning and understanding, not for filing.
- Itemized deductions
- Most tax credits
- City and local taxes
- The alternative minimum tax
Everything you type is calculated in your browser. We don't ask for an account, and we don't store your numbers.
This is an estimate for the 2026 tax year, not tax, legal, or financial advice. Figures are simplified and don't include every credit or deduction. Talk to a tax professional before making decisions.
