Take-Home Pay by State Comparison Calculator
Compare take-home pay for the same salary across multiple states side by side.
This is an estimate for the 2026 tax year, not tax, legal, or financial advice. Figures are simplified and don't include every credit or deduction. Talk to a tax professional before making decisions.
How this is calculated
We run the exact same salary through our full paycheck calculation once for each state — same federal tax brackets, same standard deduction, same Social Security and Medicare — and only swap out the state income tax rules. That isolates exactly how much of the difference in take-home pay comes down to where you live.
Some states, like Texas and Florida, charge no state income tax at all. Others charge a single flat rate on all income, and some use their own progressive brackets, similar to the federal system. Because federal tax and FICA don't change from state to state, any gap in take-home pay you see between two states is entirely the state tax line.
The full ranking below sorts every state we cover from the highest take-home pay to the lowest, for the salary and filing status you entered, using a fixed biweekly pay frequency and no 401(k) contributions so every state is compared on equal footing.
